Mortgage Underwriter
About the Role
We are recruiting on behalf of an established financial services organisation looking to appoint an experienced Mortgage Underwriter to join their team.
This role will involve assessing mortgage applications in line with lending policy, regulatory requirements and agreed service standards. You will take ownership of cases throughout the underwriting process, ensuring decisions are accurate, well documented and provide a positive experience for customers and advisers.
The successful candidate will have previous mortgage underwriting experience gained within a bank, building society or specialist mortgage lender.
Key Responsibilities

Assess and underwrite mortgage applications in accordance with lending policy, procedures and FCA requirements.

Take ownership of cases throughout the underwriting process, ensuring applications are progressed accurately and within agreed timescales.

Review supporting documentation and make appropriate lending decisions based on risk, affordability and policy.

Maintain accurate records and ensure all decisions and communications are fully documented.

Handle telephone and email enquiries from mortgage advisers, brokers and internal teams.

Build and maintain strong working relationships with advisers and other areas of the business.

Investigate and resolve queries or complaints in accordance with internal and regulatory procedures.

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of mortgage products, lending criteria and relevant FCA regulations.

Support colleagues by sharing knowledge and contributing to the continuous improvement of underwriting processes and customer service.
About You
You will ideally have:

At least 1 year's mortgage underwriting experience.

Experience within Equity Release would be particularly beneficial, although candidates from Buy-to-Let or mainstream residential mortgage underwriting backgrounds will also be considered.

Previous mortgage administration or underwriting experience within a bank, building society or mortgage lender.

Good working knowledge of FCA regulations relating to residential mortgages.

Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

A proactive, positive and solutions-focused approach.

The ability to manage a busy caseload and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
